The first two “Homefront” production stills featuring Jason Statham have been released, and we are finally provided with more detailed information about the film’s story line and its cast.
Filmed in beautiful New Orleans, Louisiana, “Homefront” is the story of Phil Broker (played by Jason Statham), a former DEA agent who is trying to start a new life with his daughter. They move to a small town in Louisiana, where he finds himself butting heads with a former biker chick (played by Winona Ryder) and the local crime leader Gator (played by James Franco).
“Broker is trying to live off the grid with his daughter, live the idyllic life,” director Gary Fleder said. “But then he runs into Gator, who has a lot of people in town afraid. Looking at it within the paradigm of the classic Western, Gator is the guy with the black hat on. Even the sheriff doesn’t want to mess with him.”
Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay, which is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Chuck Logan. Originally, he wrote the role for himself but then decided to show the script to Jason Statham while on the set of “The Expendables 2” and adapted it to suit him. The story line gives Statham a chance to go beyond his impressive fighting skills.
“I’ve done certain kind of roles up to now, and this is different from the usual tough-guy role, who does not show a lot of emotion and is mostly action,” Statham wrote from the set of “The Expendables 3” in Bulgaria. “In this film you get to see the lighter side of me. Yet there is still the tough-guy element.”
Jason Statham’s onscreen daughter is played by 12-year-old Izabela Vidovic who was the first young actress to audition during a nationwide casting search. Although the director continued to look, he ended up giving the part to her.
“Call it karma, or fate,” Fleder said. “Sometimes it’s actually just the best person who walked into the room on the first day. She’s got tremendous skill and charisma, and you really believe they are father and daughter.”
When it comes to Jason Statham’s distinctive British accent, he doesn’t need to hide it for his role as his character starts with the DEA as a British Interpol agent.
“We had a long talk about it; Jason could do an American accent. But I wanted him to be comfortable in his skin, to focus on the character, not on his accent,” Fleder said.
We also get to see Jason Statham back on a horse since his first horseback riding adventure in the 2006 action fantasy film “In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale.”
“I learned how to gallop and move a little bit better on a horse and enjoy the challenge of it all,” Statham said. “I’m very confident around any sporting activity and learning any new skill.”
Don’t worry, you’ll still get to see plenty of action as a violent confrontation between Franco’s Gator and Statham’s Broker is inevitable.
“I won’t get into the mechanics of it, but they do go at it,” Fleder said. “There’s some good mano-a-mano stuff going on here.”
“Homefront” opens in US theaters on November 27, 2013 and in UK theaters on November 29, 2013.
