Jason Statham about “Spy:” I would love to do another one of these

Tom Pitney from TheVine.com.au had a chance to talk with Jason Statham about his role in “Spy” and here is an excerpt from the interview:

What was it that convinced you to take on a comedic role?

It wasn’t a calculated decision. I caught up with Paul Feig, meeting him and I love his movies. So I was intrigued to know what he was up to. He told me he was a big action movie fan and said he’d seen pretty much every movie I’ve done.

Which I found again, like really?! I had to scratch my head. He named Crank and he named all of my films. He said I really want to put you in the next movie I’m going to do. He’s so charming and he’s so talented that you could never say no to the man.

Jason Statham wants to use his picture and an angry bird to intimidate in this alternate “Spy” scene

WSJ has shared an alternate scene from “Spy” included on the upcoming Blu-ray and it is by far one of the most brilliant moments. In the scene, Jason Statham and Allison Janney fight over who will go on the mission to hunt down De Luca (played by Bobby Cannavale). In the original version, Statham wants to use the “Face-Off” machine to go undercover undetected but in this new clip he suggests a different idea: a letter with a picture of him delivered by an angry bird.

“Anytime Statham was involved it became mayhem,” director Paul Feig said. “And that would get us writing crazier and crazier jokes for him. I’d be laughing so hard, I’d be crying behind the monitor. There were some runs that were so ridiculous, we couldn’t even put them in the movie.”

Jason Statham takes on his first TV role in “Viva La Madness”

VIVALAM

According to Deadline, Jason Statham is set to star in his first television role in “Viva La Madness,” originally a film project that has now become an hour-long TV drama series based on J. J. Connolly’s second crime novel of the same name, from Gaumont International TV.

“Viva La Madness” is the sequel to Connolly’s first crime novel “Layer Cake,” which was made into a film in 2004 with Daniel Craig in the starring role. Statham and Steven Chasman own the rights to the project and will executive produce with Connolly attached to writing the series. In “Viva La Madness,” the anonymous hero is stranded in the Caribbean itching for the criminal life he left behind–but he’s still a wanted man back home. Soon he joins forces with two robust London gangsters: the menacing Sonny King and his paranoid partner Roy “Twitchy” Burns.

“The way J. J. writes is so on the ball and authentic it’s hard to let any of it go. Trying to lose characters or shave down scenes every other page didn’t work, we wanted it all. The best place was a 10 hour plus show that lets you fully disappear into Connolly’s world,” Statham said.

“’Viva La Madness,’ with its riveting characters and twisting storyline, is a volatile cocktail of action and comedy that only J. J. Connolly can create,” Katie O’Connell Marsh, CEO for Gaumont International Television, said. “Jason Statham, known for his roles in “The Transporter” trilogy, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,” “Snatch,” “The Bank Job” as well as the recent “Furious 7” and “Spy,” brings such strength and credibility to his characters but also has an effortless shade of vulnerability that gives him so much dimension on screen.”
